Inspirational Projects

Thematic Design in Action

These projects hopefully help you gain a better understanding of initiatives and design problems I would like to explore as I continue forward in my career. The following projects reveal the true capabilities behind Architecture's ability to influence the world around us through responsive solutions that meet the demands of societal issues. Many of these projects are reflective of my idea behind the power of Thematic Design. How can a project transcend normality through a concentrated focus on attributes that allow its programmatic functions to excel while becoming a beacon for its creators' collective potentiality?

Maternity Waiting Village by MASS Design Group

What it's about

This project reflects my values concerning Thematic Design by identifying a problem in communities throughout the country of Malawi. This design creates small communal villages through clusters of tiny homes to create a safe environment for mothers recovering from child birth.

Why it matters

This project is a prototype of a larger idea behind evolving structures in communities devoid of architecture capable of catalyzing prosperity. In my professional practice, I strive to involve myself in design that will have an outreaching influence towards communities in need of careful consideration. This firm also includes in each of their project headlines a question that identifies a problem which the design is trying to solve. This is a chief interest of mine in my career as I continue to pursue design opportunities capable of deeply affecting the challenges of our Global society.

University of Saskatchewan Collaborative Science Research Building by FLAD Architects

What it's about

This project facilitates ground breaking research on drought-tolerant crops. This facility respects the Gothic style of the campus while celebrating its modern functionality through its expansive green roof feature.

Why it matters

Designing architecture that provides a space for innovation in the field of Climate Change adaptation is a chief interest of mine. California is still suffering from an historic drought (ended recently in 2019), and subsequent wild fires have destroyed crops and damaged lives. How can architects help with daunting problems threatening our natural environment?

The High Line by Diller Scofidio and Renfro

What it's about

This project adapts old transportation infrastructure into a novel solution for bringing greenery into dense urban confines.

Why it matters

At Ball State's School of Design, we were immensely interested in brownfield renewal considering our location in the Rust Belt of America. How can we renovate all outdated edifices of America's Industrial past for renewed purpose in the future?

Fahmy House by Preston Scott Cohen Inc.

What it's about

This project utilizes a stringent design process to analyze how building form can directly respond to contextual and cultural influences in the surrounding area. This high-end residential design provides a family with an interesting built environment respective of the beautiful topography nestled around it.

Why it matters

My undergraduate studies challenged our studio to constantly refine our design concepts. Each iteration was met with constructive scrutiny. This process ultimately yielded complete solutions absent of simplistic neglect, and often multi-purposed and multifaceted. I also have a special interest in being involved in high-end residential design in the future because of the intense focus on small details. How can each house in the future be reflective of the people, environment, and culture to which it serves?

Temporary British Parliament by Gensler

What it's about

This project provides temporary housing for Britain's Parliament while the main buildings are renovated. The modular structure provides easily adaptable programming, and the solution itself saved tax payers millions.

Why it matters

Projects such as these become architectural statements that allow designers to become recognized as key contributors to society. Involvement in these sort of solutions allows a designer's influence to resound into history.

BorneRiget by Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects

What it's about

This project takes an entire different approach to Health Care design by intermixing a focus on natural light and materiality. The footprint of the complex is derived from circulation paths between specific contextual nodes.

Why it matters

My experience with healthcare design at TEG Architects has taught me how difficult integrating novel solutions into stringent codes can be. Maintaining a specific hospital workflow between the spaces while simultaneously celebrating design ideas, such as Biophilic innovation, is an impressive aspect behind this project.
