Thematic Design in Action

Hayward Field by SRG
Why it matters
This facility for the university of Oregon is a state of the art Track and Field center that uses engineered wood and a steel structure to create a building that's intimately connected to the beautiful urban landscape. How can engineered wood products create wondrous structures that ultimately lessen the impact on the environment compared to concrete based alternatives.

B2 by Shop Architects
What it's about.
This tower is the world's tallest modular residential building. The modular units comprising this tower provide
affordable housing through increased construction efficiency and reduction of waste. The modules are much lighter
by square footage compared to traditional construction and offer adaptability for the future,
Why it matters
Prefabricated design is critical for the construction industry as clients demand more bang for their buck. How can
architects contribute to sustainability initiatives while providing substantial design through modular construction
that has a host of benefits compared to traditional alternatives?

Soundproof Installation at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden by
Unknown
What it's about.
This installation made of high performance concrete and bubble wrap uses millions of micro-perforations to absorb
excess noise. The unique aesthetics behind this installation feel fitting for the laboratory around it.
Why it matters
I've been in many buildings that become overbearingly noisy when busy. A bustling bar on a weekend night can
be almost deafening from loud conversations (not to mention the music). How can architecture use new digital
fabrication techniques in conjunction with material research to benefit the quality of the spaces we inhabit?

Urban Garage by Mass Green Living / Anawan/101 + Kane AUD
What it's about.
This design competition explores how new ways of using small abandoned lots in New York City to provide more
affordable housing options. The shared public spaces between smaller living units allows for outdoor gathering
opportunities where real-estate prices are at an all time high.
Why it matters
Many affordable housing units in city centers are tiny units that do not provide adequate options for healthy living. Society is also beginning to lose its third places (places outside of the primary live and work typologies where social engagement can occur) and subsequently a loneliness epidemic is occurring. How can architecture provide spaces for socializing where amenities previously restricted to suburban living can be enjoyed by urban inhabitants?

House Between Buildings by Hernández Arquitectos
What it's about.

Resilient by Design by MVRDV
This project responds to space availability constraints of tight urban environments by using verticality and strategic
placements of voids to create spacial variance reflective of homes in the countryside.
Why it matters
As society transitions to an urban dominated model, architects must challenge the city fabric to determine how to
maximize the capabilities of limited space.
What it's about.
This project challenges the conventional designs of coastlines and explores how expanded civic infrastructure and
landscaping could mitigate the effects of rising sea levels from Climate Change while providing public areas capable
of improving lives.
Why it matters
BIG architecture has a similar scheme for New York city's coastline to respond to rising sea levels. Climate Change
will require coastlines to explore new ways of dealing with water infiltration. How can these solutions benefit the
surrounding public by providing landscaping and architecture opportunities capable of turning these necessary
additions into iconic places for gathering?
