Thematic Design in Action

The way this project celebrates imperfections and truth in materials proves that cost effective design can be grand
and effective. How can all architects find unique ways of creating meaningful places while using resources efficiently?

What it's About
This house promotes the theme of truth in materials when exploring how to make an urban home spacious and
aesthetically pleasing. All of the form decisions made in this house relate to maximizing its relationship to its immediate
context. Many of the furnishings in the house are repurposed items to reduce cost. One such instance of this includes countertops made from sliding closet doors found at any hardware store.

Platform for a Renewable Future by FABRICations
What it's About
This project explores how oil rigs might be repurposed in a sustainable future where oil is no longer a necessity. These large structures have to be dismantled carefully to protect the natural ecosystems they reside in, but certain elements from them might be able to be reused for sustainable energy production.
Why it matters
Many large industries will have complex that need to be adapted for new uses in an incredibly dynamic and tentative
future. I've seen personally at Structurepoint. The office was exploring a potential project that hypothesized new
programmatic uses for dying malls falling to the effects of online shopping. How can outdated structures still serve
us to avoid brownfield waste?

What it's About
This concept for a MARS habitat draws on a comprehensive knowledge of material science and robotic building technology processes to prototype a surface based structure for the colonization of Mars. The basalt material used to 3D print the structure is air tight and available in large quantities on this neighboring planet. This material and its
application through precise 3D printer devices should allow the interior spaces to be shielded from the harmful radiation
that permeates Mars' thin atmosphere.
Why it matters
Understanding the technical limitations behind building on Mars is critical. However, understanding ways to build on
Mars that promote the mental well-being of citizens is even more imperative. How can novel building practices create
communities on other planets which respect the inherent needs of its people?

3d Printed Food by byFlow
What it's About
This company strives to use 3D printing technology to innovate in the culinary environment. 3d printers maximize
resource efficiency while creating forms that would be impossible to complete by hand.
Why it matters
This project is a testament to the wide range of opportunities presented by new fabrication technologies. Architects
must be constantly aware of these diverse avenues of exploration to understand how they might influence the built
environment of the future.

Good Vibrations by MIT Senseable City Lab
What it's About
This project by MIT uses the accelometer in smart phones to determine how bridges vibrate as the host car drives over
them. The application on the smartphone would gather data about the vibrations experienced over multiple trips
to determine if the infrastructure is structurally sound.
Why it matters
America is facing a huge public infrastructure problem as old structures deteriorate and fewer inspections occur to
access their consideration. How can other applications developed for devices we have 24/7 (smartphones) allow us to
analyze buildings in a similar manner to understand problems/ opportunities associated with them?

Good Vibrations by MIT Senseable City Lab
What it's About
This project uses a novel construction technique of inflating a tube with a steel sheathing to create organic forms that are incredibly strong.
Why it matters
Using materials in innovative ways creates architecture that resounds in the memories of those who experience it. What
other futuristic material applications can help built structures become iconic while solidifying the importance of
digital fabrication in the future of design?
