Thematic Design in Action

This project derives inspiration from a lobster's exoskeleton to explore how a solid state chair with hidden technical
mechanisms allow for maximum comfort in an aesthetically pleasing package. How can more furniture use new
technologies to create dynamic furniture systems that flex for comfort while maintaining a clean modern style?

Why it matters
Why it matters
The simple material palette and color contrasts of this coffee shop combined with the peg board's repetitious patterns shown through dynamic shadows and reflections to create an elegant and intriguing interior. This design is a testament to the capabilities behind minimalist design interventions.

Why it matters
This dramatic heavy timber form frames the cliffside view perfectly while expressing its appealing vertical patternicity
through the overlapping structural members above.
One Spadina Crescent by NADAAA
Why it's About
This project connects a historic building with a new expansive addition intimately connected with a revitalized landscape
that acts as a node of connectivity for the University of Toronto Campus. An adaptable "Flex Hall" allows for large scale
gatherings to occur with the ability to compartmentalize the space when necessary.
Why it matters
This design which had connectivity and sustainability in mind provides beautiful light feeling spaces where educational
events and personalized collaboration sessions can both take place. Creating this sort of atmosphere in learning
environments is imperative for the development of creative pursuits.

Primitive Hut by CO-DA
What it's About
This temporary installation uses a repeating modular element with slotted connections to create a symbolically
extension of nature destined to decompose to promote the growth of natural elements. The module forms were
designed to optimize use of material to create an intuitive parametric structure.
Why it matters
Kengo Kuma uses specific connection detail modules as a thematic element in many of his design's which often
promotes the structure's functionality and aesthetic value. How can intuitive connection elements in an organized
network create structures that are both symbolic and effective in providing value through built structures?

Accessory Dwelling Units by COVER
What it's About
This project isn't a specific building by a traditional architecture company, but rather a building system developed by
a technology company with the mission of providing cost effective prefabricated housing units through a mass
production assembly line. Customers have various options available to configure their living spaces to their liking.
Why it matters
I have seen the commodification of architecture discussed in both school and in firms as a concern for the construction
industry moving forward. Technological advancements now allow for different approaches to be taken for constructing
edifices that can often be more efficient. How can architects respond to this by adopting successful aspects of these
companies while providing our own unique insight?
