Thematic Design in Action

What its About
This museum draws on the influence of its contextual mountains to provide dramatic interior volumes respective of the
immediate environment. The building's footprint and respective urban planning are intimately connected to the constraints provided by the neighboring roads and river.
Why it matters
Strong themes that drive building form and development are critical for the success of ambitious designs. How can
architects propose daring building concepts by revealing the incredible value added to a site by a structure that truly
relates to its contextual culture and environment.
Chengdu Museum of National History by Pelli Clark Pelli

What its About
This concert canopy draws formal inspiration from the rolling fields filled with flowers. It's symbolic nature is
supplemented by functional value through the enhancement of the concert experience through better facilitated views and acoustics for concert goers.
Why it matters
Concert venues have the capability of dramatically enhancing performances. An incredibly interesting structure can frame a beautiful performance in a way that will resonate with the audience into the far future.
Huatian Theater by ADINJU

Bioceramic Dome by Geoship
What its About
This startup challenges conventionality in current affordable housing solutions by exploring new ways novel building
materials can provide dynamic shelters at a far more affordable rate. The crystalline ceramic material capable of achieving
these amorphous forms is extremely resilient and strives to form structures capable of lasting 500 years.
Why it matters
New digital fabrication methods provide ample opportunities for affordable housing solutions through maximized
efficiency brought forth by automated construction systems. 3D printed houses offer similar cost saving opportunities, and startups such as these have the capability of establishing dominance in this industry currently destined for dramatic expansion.

Home for Migrant Workers by Guopengliang
What its About
This concept explorations the capability for communal connections between transitional housing units for displaced
migrants. An intuitive space frame and uniform circulation cores in each unit combine in a cohesive network respective of
the needs of its residents.
Why it matters
Current migrant housing schemes neglect the core values needed in a built environment. How can design facilitate
positive experiences for disenfranchised people to encourage healthy communities to form?

Powerhouse Brattørkaia by Snohetta
What its About
This waterfront office building uses a huge sloping PV array to generate net positive energy that services its power needs as
well as the power needs of immediate contextual buildings. The central light well provides ample daylighting along with
the windows that look out towards the waterfront scenery.
Why it matters
We discussed in school the concept of an Eco-district where neighboring buildings in the urban environment work in
a symbiotic network to create closed-loop autonomous systems that mitigate waste and pollution.

Car Park 2.0 by Studio NAB
What its About
This design explores biophilic potentiality for future parking lot designs where nature is further integrated into the site
scheme. These sorts of permeable pathways allow for agricultural opportunities while still providing ample room for
personal vehicles
Why it matters
Much of the modern built environment is forced to work around the functionality of the automobile. This causes large surface areas to be devoid of true value while causing subsequent issues like the urban heat island effect & flooding from inadequate storm water drainage.
