Thematic Design in Action

Although definitely not an architecture project, this conceptual narrative is quite interesting. Tuleva is a theoretical
study of a portion of a fabled giant humanoid robot found in an architectural dig.
Why it matters
I think its always incredibly encouraging to see firms play around with "unconventional" design prospects. Often times, when under constant pressure to produce structures capable of generating revenue to sustain a business, I believe firms become begrudgingly constrained by the limitations of the practice in the real world. Projects like
these catalyze the creative part of our minds and can lead to further inspiration for buildings that are capable of
providing concrete value to the lives of others.

Staten Island Water Hub by Lot-Ek
What its About
This conceptual project responds to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy while using "Upcycled" Shipping
containers in a novel form factor to create resilient architecture. This project aims to reconnect people to the waterfront
while preventing further erosion and adding civic value to the community.
Why it matters
This project functions highly on multiple levels by exploring resilient architecture responding to the effects of Climate
Change while also building on principles behind sustainable design through reuse of industrial materials. How can
the Post-Industrial world of architecture meet the Climate Change resilience sector through experimental forms that
build on the opportunities presented by both global trends?

Public Administrative Town by H-Architecture
What its About
This masterplan connects various programmatic elements through a multi-tiered landscape dominated structure
designed to maximize views while integrating nature into this government complex.
Why it matters
Effective masterplanning respective of the human scale is critical for the development of a cohesive complex of buildings. When combined with nature and principles behind prospect and refuge in the public realm, this master plan begins to form a futuristic interesting network that maintains an equilibrium between circulation and destination.

Why it matters
This building is a testament to the power behind combining representative design decisions with practical programmatic performance. The amorphic form, very much connected to the exterior landscaping, fosters internal connectivity between the different Olympic departments.

3D Printed House by Benoit Furet, University of Nantes
What its About
This is one of the first 3D printed houses for a small family located in France. The novel building practice costs less than
traditional construction methods while allowing ample room for form flexibility. Installation of the fenestration and other
building elements still required contractor involvement, but the primary core structure was printed in its entirety in 54
hours.
Why it matters
The fundamentals behind residential building construction methods have for the most part remained unchanged for hundreds of years. Adopting new tools such as large scale 3D printers allows constructors to minimize waste. It also provides architects with more flexibility when creating affordable housing.

What its About
This theoretical project explores how highrises might respond to rising sea levels. This exploration into a typology
responsive to Climate Change explores how new dynamic connections between a submerged ground plane and elevated habitable region might manifest in a future comprised of resilient coastal architecture
Why it matters
New York City is already constructing a sea wall to respond to devastating storm surges from the looming Climate Change dilemma. How will structures deviate from past norms to excel in a future comprised of a tremulous climate?
Skygrove by Hollwich Kushner

Ribbon Bridge by CX Landscape
What its About
This project connects separated land masses with a nature integrated bridge designed to respond to the negative
effects behind habitat isolation. As cities grow and urban sprawl runs rampant, animals are often separated from their
natural habitats. Projects like these challenge our ability to shape future built environments to serve both people and
the naturalistic world.
Why it matters
Earth is currently experiencing the 6th greatest mass extinction of species. All of the prior extinction events consisted of
climatic natural occurrences, while this one is an anthropomorphic driven one steadily worsening as humanity continues
to manipulate this planet's various environments. As we continue to build, how can we better understand our ability to
coexist within the natural processes which are critical for our own prosperity?
Pulkovo Airport by Grimshaw
What its About
This project pays homage to St. Petersburg's classic architecture while abstracting it enough to retain its own futuristic
identity. The large repeating bay apertures are reminiscent of the city's iconic front facades. The tessellated roof is also
a functional aspect that manages snow drifts through trough like forms which collects water from the snow as it melts.
Why it matters
Architecture which pays homage to past building styles can often be tacky when rationalizing modernistic forms with
classical layouts. This project masterfully builds a pond the built identity of this city while using the novel forms to serve
greater purposes.
Olympic House by 3XN
What its About
This center for the Olympic Committee combines form symbolism with sustainable system functionality to create a
harmonious complex that represents this organization's commitment to forward thinking. The undulating facade,
representative of the dynamic movements which characterize this historic athletic event, uses a double skin louver
system to manage heat gains from natural light.
