Cedrus Office by Gus Wüstemann Architects

Why it matters

This office's material palette is greatly complimented by the use of cove lighting. The new age industrial style importance of material life-cycle considerations is really interesting to me and will undoubtedly be an avenue of exploration in my career.

Navy Pier Redesign Competition by Urbanlab

Why it matters

Place-making is incredibly important for exterior plazas in urban environments to thrive with life. How can we design all

places to attract the public through meaningful

What it's about.

This competition submission for the redesign of Navy Pier in Chicago uses dramatic forms and expanded themes of this

destination to create a dazzling public attraction.

Jeongok Museum by Urbanlab

What it's about.

This design draws inspiration from Biophilic design and the capabilities of its contextual environment to create a museum

respective of its mission to teach the world about Korea's archaeological past. The "aggregated singularities" that comprise the structure reflect the strength of similar natural formations while using the thick Basalt Earth around the facility to create the large cantilever which outstretches over the ground beneath it.

Why it matters

Architecture can learn a great deal from analyzing naturalistic patterns to understand how future human habitats can build on the innate genius of the Universe. How can all of our buildings achieve better functionality through understanding the systems that frame our lives?

Malawi School by NUDES

What it's about.

This design uses a wooden superstructure with waffle compartments designed to house hay bales as a cladding system.

The structure and cladding both reflect the need for community involvement in the construction of this facility. The

cladding modules can easily be swapped out for terracotta options or for replacement of existing hay bales. The Adaptable super structure also allows for future expansion.

Why it matters

Kengo Kuma often does something similar in his work concerning an individual modules power in a connective series. A simple construction detail used in the right pattern and capable of connecting other similar units effectively results in a

harmonious composition capable of dazzling and functioning effectively.

Yamasen Japanese Restaurant by TERRAIN Architects

What it's about.

This restaurant in Uganda uses natural material choices like Eucalyptus along with natural forms to compliment the

values of this culture. The large pitched roof angles allow space for existing trees to remain while simultaneously creating variable heights in rooms to enhance their programmatic function.

Why it matters

The use of natural materials and forms create implied patterns which enhance this facility's overall aesthetic. People often

go to a restaurant for an experience, and this design provides a venue which can elevate each patrons visit through its

impactful decor.

Quito Towers by odD+ Architects

Developer driven architecture for dense urban living often uses minimalist forms devoid of inspiration from the

structure's host culture. How can modern high-rise designs reflect on the historic architecture styles of the region to create structures that are reflective of the past while satisfying the needs of the future?

What it's about.

This modernist housing solution pays homage to the classical cloister style in Quito, Equador through an abstract

reinterpretation of its patternicity. The modules that frame each dwelling allow for roof gardens to further enhance

this structure's beauty.
