Micro Library by Shau Architects

What it's about

This unique library uses recycled ice cream tubes as cladding elements for natural lighting and ventilation. Angling the elements outward accomplishes rain screening, and variations in orientation allow for pixelated patterns to emerge.

Why it matters

Natural lighting and ventilation is often neglected in modern American architecture. Patrons of a building often choose to cover windows during the daytime and rely on harsher artificial lighting. How can cheap solutions similar to this one be implemented in all interior spaces devoid of daylight?

Thematic Design in Action

What it's about

This theoretical project offers insightful floor plan schemes for compact living in crowded cities of the future. Each card rates the scheme based on factors such as percent of exterior exposure, level of space openness in the plan, etc.

Why it matters

The suburban model will not work in developing nations with exploding population densities. However, domestic architecture should not be subjected to only the square apartment high-rise solution for housing the masses of the future. How can novel solutions maximize the potential of crammed spaces in dense urban fabrics?

50 Floor Plans for Desirable Collective Housing

by A&T Research Group

What it's about

This project, located in Paris ,responds to the ongoing housing crisis for new coming refugees. adaptable transitional housing provides safe confines for travelers committed to rebuilding their lives in a foreign

city.

Why it matters

What it's about

This project recreates the "fantastical" mythical landscapes in Denmark's literature through the integration of nature intertwined with the built environment. Engineered wood mixes with growing vines and shrubs to create a harmonious built extension into nature.

Why it matters

Sustainable design and Biophilic design can combine to create human habitats respective of the natural beauty of the world. Why can't every building be a habitat for nature?

Dubai Solar Innovation by Antoine Predock Architects

What it's about

This project responds to Climate Change in the Middle East through concealing this community in an underground cavern. This building complex uses the constant temperature of the Earth to condition its interior spaces in conjunction with evaporative cooling through various water features. Its solar chimney channels hot air upward through a stack ventilation application while its innovative technological skin harness power from Dubai's intense sunlight.

Why it matters

Responding to Climate Change will be an incredible challenge for the built environment, and its solutions will be varied

based on each building's contextual environment. The Middle East is projected to become extremely hot over the coming

years, so architecture will need to respond in dramatic ways that question our traditional; understanding of a buildings

relationship to the Earth beneath it.

World Farm Building by Plantagon

What it's about

This building serves the duel purpose of housing office space an expansive vertical gardens capable of bringing nutrition more efficiently in dense urban environments. This example of "agritecture" shows the viability behind rethinking the way we farm in order to better sustain large urban populations in the future. Sustainable systems are critical for this structure's success as well. The power plant serving this facility has a symbiotic relationship where excess product waste from one and heat waste from another combine to create efficient close looped systems.

Why it matters

Urban agriculture centers like this might become vital for an entirely different reason than the need for convenience and better economy of logistics; Climate Change. Growing crops in regions decimated by drought or extreme rainfall might not be sufficient enough to provide for a larger global population.
