This project deviates from the norm entirely. This in depth examination and recreation of Syrian torture prisons, common facilities used in the Syrian Civil War, portrays how architecture can be used as a tool for political persecution. Forensic Architects draws from the talents of a diverse team of architects, artists, journalists, and much more to develop presentations capable of revealing architecture's undeniable connection to human rights abuses and social injustices.
Why it matters
Architecture affects the entirety of our modern day society through its facilitation of actions based on cultural ideals and expressions. Analyzing and understanding its influence is crucial for a more evolved and justified future.
What it's about
This project pays homage to the traditional roots of this city through its use of architectural form and material selection. The juxtaposition of natural forms inter-playing with light reflections and intersecting patterns creates a wondrous environment complementary to the programmatic function of this facility. Art exhibitions are enhanced by a striking environment indicative of the creative prowess of the citizens of this ancient city.
Why it matters
Modern architecture can often become devoid of identity if the International Style overwhelms its inherent forms. How can current construction practices still promote the host culture of its creators?
Much of modern American architecture values utility and cost savings over truly celebrating the essence of the people who manifest its built environment. What can America learn from countries who find a healthy medium between modern construction and traditional built expression?
Why it matters
This very symbolic structure, like the project above, pays homage to its contextual cultural and environment as a way of advertising the extraordinary nature of the Netherlands. Undulating platform and the minimization of visual barriers connects patrons to the seas which characterize this island nation.
What it's about
Graphically analyzing landscapes provides designers with clearer insight into the inherent forces motivating a project's form and functionality. This firm does an exceptional job locating nodes, datums, and intuitive pathways which further promote their effectiveness.

What it's about
This massive brownfield renovation project provides and live/ work community for thousands of residents. Built on sustainability principles ranging from recycled building materials to bioswales, this community provides a clear example of how future built environments can respond to the consequences of outdated construction practices.
Why it matters
College campuses are often cited as the ultimate definitions of autonomous communities where patrons can live, work, and play in a confined region capable of satisfying our basic and existential needs. How can the American suburban model transform into human habitats defined by dynamic systems and comprised of onsite energy production, food cultivation, and much more.
Although slightly bland in architectural form, this project interests me because of its political implications. Britain continues to lose its footing as an innovation destination because of its self- imposed removal from the European Union. France has taken this opportunity to solidify its position as a meaningful force in this new Global economy. How can architecture facilitate increased collaboration between institutions striving to manifest meaningful innovation capable of changing lives for the better?
Why it matters
This renovation of an historic French Train station provides spaces for the world's largest tech startups.
What it's about

Millions of existing structures insufficiently satisfying the energy and spacial necessities of the future need to be reimagined and readapted. How can more solutions (including other subtle ones) be devised and implemented to this vast collection of structures to resolve the Climate Change dilemma.
Why it matters
These "parasitic" additions to an existing 1970's apartment complex promote greater energy efficiency while simultaneously expanding the floor plates of each floor to maximize rentable space. Material selection and preparation of these modules further strengthens this project's sustainability goals.
What it's about
Plug-In City 75 by Malka Architecture
Climate change threatens low lying sea nations as water levels rise from depleting glaciers at the Earth's poles. Creating communities that are adaptable with these fluctuating sea levels is paramount for the prosperity of nations who cannot
afford to lose the land real estate threatened by wasteful CO2 emissions.
Why it matters
Floating city modules offer the possibility of creating communities free from nationalistic borders. Interchanging connection pieces can allow varying use spaces to intertwine in dynamic human habitats that could be upgraded over time.

Why it matters
Relaying the intent of a project accurately while also celebrating the artistic nature of design is a powerful combination. How can the promotion of a project strike at the interest of clients and other designers alike?
Pollution Domes by Michael Pinsky
What it's about
This installation provides insight into the state of air pollution in major cities worldwide. Patrons can experience the everyday air quality dilemma of large metropolitan areas continually expanding as the new global society transitions from rural to urban living.
Why it matters
Empathy and shared perspective have the potential to change the world. How can architecture facilitate a deeper understanding in people absent from the struggles of the less fortunate who comprise an ever larger fraction of our global society?
